Unlike a typical starting battery that delivers short bursts for engine starting, deep cycle batteries can repeatedly discharge and recharge, essential for RV or motorhome living. Also, because the nominal voltage for a marine battery is 12 volts, it's compatible with your RV’s electrical system. “Marine/RV battery" and "deep-cycle battery" are terms that categorize batteries in two different ways, what they can do versus where they’re used. All marine/RV batteries have the dual post, marine-style terminals. Some are deep-cycle batteries, and some are cranking or dual-purpose batteries. Marine batteries may serve dual functions while traditional deep cycle batteries focus solely on deep cycling. Deep-cycle batteries can have an automotive-style battery post, a utility post or a marine/RV post.
One downside of deep-cycle batteries is their weight and bulk, which can limit convenience. A lead-acid type of battery needs regular maintenance, such as monitoring water levels and proper charging to prevent sulfation and reduced battery life. They also generally have lower energy density than lithium batteries, storing less energy for the same size or weight, which is crucial in weight-sensitive applications like RVs.
